Have you ever wondered what all the hype about LED light therapy is about? Interestingly, part of the groundwork for the modern uses we see in clinics today came from NASA’s research on its use for plant growth and wound healing in the 1990’s. Though the research didn’t support its use for plant growth, its benefits to human health have indeed been proven as a valuable treatment option. It is a gentle, non-invasive treatment that can address a variety of cosmetic and systemic conditions.

What Does Red Light Therapy Treat?

Red light therapy is the most widely used of the colors on the LED spectrum. It is commonly used to rejuvenate the skin through its ability to stimulate cellular energy production, increase collagen synthesis and cell turnover rate, and improve blood circulation. This translates to improved skin tone and elasticity, along with reduction of fine lines. It can act as a standalone treatment or be incorporated into acupuncture or facial treatments.

In addition to increasing local blood circulation, red light can also stimulate hair follicles, making it an important addition to hair loss treatment. It is most effective for treating thinning hair rather than baldness, as it is unable to revive hair cells that have already died. Once the initial treatment phase has passed, it is necessary to continue maintenance treatments to retain hair growth results.

Other LED Light Therapy Colors

Besides red light, LED light therapy also includes several other colors, which each penetrate the skin at different depths and may also be combined together to address complex conditions. Red light penetrates the deepest, followed by yellow, green, and blue. Yellow light is best used for developing an even skin tone, as this color depth can help regulate melanin production. While green light can also regulate skin pigmentation, it is especially helpful for calming inflammation and treating redness, as seen in conditions like rosacea and acne. Finally, as the most superficial light frequency, blue light excels at targeting bacteria on the skin’s surface to effectively combat acne.

At-home Devices

There are also many LED devices marketed for home use. The important thing to consider with these devices is the power output. While some devices do indeed emit LED light as advertised, not all are equipped with enough power to create effective results. If using LED light therapy at home, be sure to follow all instructions and wear appropriate eye protection. If you’re unsure if LED light therapy is right for you, check with your healthcare provider or schedule a free consultation with Essence Acupuncture Wellness.
